With the month of January over halfway over, many people’s New Year’s Resolutions are already falling by the wayside. Goals to get fit, eat healthier, and be more productive are hard to maintain. It’s even harder (read: impossible) to maintain productivity if you don’t have access to safe, clean water. If you had to walk eight hours each day to collect dirty water from whatever nearest standing water source you had access to, it would keep you from being able to go to work and earn a living. If you were out sick for countless days each year suffering from extreme diarrhea, dysentery, or cholera, you couldn’t provide for your family’s needs. This is the reality of the water crisis.

We talk a lot about the disease or health implications of the water crisis at Thirst Project, and the impact on children and families and death, but productivity and economics are important elements of community development as well. Productivity, employment, these are more than goals or New Year’s Resolutions for millions of women globally. These are dreams that go unrealized and keep the cycle of poverty in place.

Globally, women spend 200 Million hours collecting water EACH DAY!

That’s incredible. When you bring safe, clean water into a community, it means that women who used to spend their entire days walking to fetch water no longer have to anymore. They can take that time and get an education; they can take that time and get a job. It impacts every single component of community development and life.

Give the Gift of Clean Water this Holiday Season
$20 provides one Person with safe, clean drinking water.

The Thirst Project has now launched our ambitious Holiday Campaign, “$40k in 40-Days” and we can’t do this without you!

From Thanksgiving Day to New Year’s Eve is exactly 40 days and we’re looking for just 2,000 generous people to give just $20 between now and New Year’s Eve.
If 2,000 people each give $20, we will be able to bring the Edlozini Community in Swaziland, the greatest gift they could receive this Holiday Season: Clean Water!

Roll with me on this one…

The much-anticipated release of Halo 4 this week was incredible. Sales jumped to $220 Million on its FIRST DAY alone. The estimated cost to give every single person safe, clean water in Swaziland is just $50 Million. We love us some video games, but…those numbers are crazy! This and so many other things reaffirms our belief that our goals are not impossible. We WILL end this. Video games are not bad (we play them at our office!), and we’re not asking people not to buy video games. What we are doing, though, is mobilizing a generation of young people to be socially-conscious and to realize that they really DO have the capacity to make huge change. So go play Halo 4 (maybe at your neighbor’s house?), and give someone clean water today!
